Step by step manual to build a WAV

For every conversion kit we create to build a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), we make a very extensive build manual. In this manual we explain you step by step, without skipping even one step, which actions the mechanics have to perform to build in the conversion kit.

We do everything possible to support our partners in the best possible way. One part is that the conversion of a wheel chair accessible vehicle or bus with a rear low floor from B-Style Mobility Solution is super easy and fast. This was one of the starting points when the R&D department of B-Style designed the conversion kit. A very clear manual helps you even more to convert very fast.

B-Style converts the first vehicle in their own workshop

The kit which is invented on the drawing board in the R&D department, will be built in our own workshop. Before we introduce a new conversion kit, we completely build the kit into a vehicle. This way we double check that everything we designed fit perfectly in real life. This is the only way to optimize a kit when necessary. Every step we take is noted and photographed so that we can implement this information in our build manuals.

Only certified conversion partners

There are different types of conversion kits from B-Style Mobility Solutions, that lets you convert a wheelchair accessible vehicle, wheelchair accessible bus or city bus. Depending on the type of conversion, there will be big changes to the vehicle. Therefor B-Style will test all conversions and realizes European Whole Vehicle Type approvals which will assure that the alterations to the vehicle are completely safe. For this reason we only let approved, certified, trained and skilled partners build the B-Style conversion. Safety and quality are paramount.

Bill of materials and necessary tools

An important part of the manual is the bill of materials. A conversion kit from B-Style is delivered complete including all necessary parts. Each part has a unique number which is referred to per step. This way there can never be a misunderstanding regarding which part is needed for what. The parts are grouped per step, in the bill of materials and as well physically in the conversion kit. As an example we have grouped all parts needed to adapt the exhaust. This will eliminate searching for parts and speeds up the build in time of the kit. When a loose part is needed for after-sales or when there are questions about a part, the part number will help significant. There can never be any mistakes regarding a part.

A different part of this chapter is the list of necessary tools and aids which should be available at the converter during the conversions of the vehicle. When all is available, the mechanic can start to build the wheelchair accessible vehicle or wheel chair bus.

All steps with pictures, images, drawings and almost no text

A pictures says more than a thousand words. To explain something is more difficult than to show it on a picture or drawing. We want our manual to be as easy as possible for our partners and our experience is that mechanics are practically minded and prefer to look at pictures then read text. In some case the mechanic is not able to understand English or they do not take the time to read. We try to clarify each step with pictures. Per picture or image you will find a reference to a part (with a part number0 which is needed in this step.

Highlight / Colors per part

Our R&D department designs every part themselves. The 3d drawings they make are used in our manuals too. Through highlighting a part it is easy to point out a specific part. On the following picture you see the highlighted part in green so it is each to see which part is mentioned and which components are needed. In one overview it is clear what you need and where to mount it. If you follow the steps in the manual the conversion is child’s play and the conversion kit will always fit perfectly.

De-assembly and preparing for the conversion kit

To prepare the vehicle for the conversions, we need to de-assemble certain parts of the vehicle. To convert a wheelchair bus with a B-FiT system is very easy, the plug and play floor is glued on top of the original floor.

When converting a wheel chair accessible vehicle the conversion is more radical, we cut away a part of the floor to make space for the lowered floor. To make sure that the cut out is made in the correct place, we deliver templates and explain step by step in the build manual how to do this.

Despite the radical alteration, you can convert a vehicle already from 16 hours or more. B-Style can deliver a lowered entry step for the Mercedes-Benz, the B-Open, and a lowered floor in the middle of the Sprinter to create a City Bus; the B-Moved.

Conversion - Build a WAV

When the OEM-vehicle is ready to be modified, we can start the B-Style Mobility Solution conversion. Here we take our conversion partner step by step through the process, and explain per step clearly which parts are needed and what should be done. The work can easily be taken over by another mechanic in the meanwhile.

The fitting is made even more easy by exploded view drawings, a schematic drawing where the necessary parts can be found loose from each other. With the help of dotted lines between the components and bolts it is made clear how the conversion has to be mounted and how all parts fit together.

This way we go one step further then pictures or a drawing. This is also to clarify and help our partners in the best way. The numbers refer to a description or part number.

Finishing

The conversion kits of B-Style Mobility Solutions are characterized by a very neat finishing. An example is the rear bumper for the B-Active wheel chair car, which, despite the lowered floor, is almost invisible when you choose the optional Bumper package.

Due to a tailored construction we finish the cut through bumper parts neatly and place this part back on the tailgate. In the build manual we explain with millimetre precision where the alterations take place.

Space for own notes

We do our upmost best to make the build manual as clear as possible but it is always possible that the mechanic prefers to describe the step in his own way. Therefor we leave an open space for own notes at the end of every chapter. This space can also be used for tips for your colleagues or to write down the location in the warehouse, etcetera.

Revisions

Car manufacturers (OEM) change their vehicles every once in a while with an update or improvement. This could mean that we need to update our kit as well and so does B-Style. As you would expect, the build manuals will get updated then as well. Sometimes we have updates or improvement of ourselves too, like a new ramp. This will always be paired with a revision of the build manual.
